In my few months covering the New York Mets for Rant Sports, there has been one thing that I’ve been pretty vocal about over the past several months: If the New York Mets let Jose Reyes walk (which they should), they need to trade David Wright as well.  Buster Olney feels the same way.  An Insider account is required, but Olney basically just speaks common sense.  The New York Mets are not going to compete for championships over the next few seasons and by the time they do, David Wright probably won’t be there anyway.  Why not move him now when several teams are in need of a third baseman and a solid return can be obtained?  I’ve discussed several teams and several prospects the New York Mets could potentially target to further bolster their improving farm system.  The Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners and Colorado Rockies  could each be solid fits for David Wright and each have a young player or two that could interest Sandy Alderson and the New York Mets.

I have nothing against David Wright.  He had some incredible seasons as a Met and its a shame that Citi Field, various injuries and a Matt Cain fastball to the head have led to a much less effective performer over the past few seasons.  I wish him the best, but I’m anxious to see him moved.  The sooner the New York Mets fully commit to this rebuilding effort, the sooner they can develop a new foundation from which to build a championship caliber club upon.
