Joy R. Absalon-US PRESSWIRE

During the Winter Meetings last week, the Los Angeles Dodgers evidently came close to acquiring infielder Daniel Murphy in a trade with the New York Mets.  According to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, Los Angeles Dodgers’ GM Ned Colletti said the potential deal for Daniel Murphy fell through when the New York Mets addressed their needs elsewhere.  I’m curious of who the Los Angeles Dodgers were offering in a deal for Daniel Muphy.  The New York Mets acquired Andes Torres from the San Fransisco Giants, but they only moved Angel Pagan for him.  Based on WAR figures from Fangraphs and Baseball-Reference, I would imagine that Daniel Murphy would fetch more in a deal than Angel Pagan.

This probably won’t be the last that we hear from this development because the Dodgers are still interested in acquiring the versatile infielder – I realize that sounds like an oxymoron because Murphy is not really praised for his defensive ability, but I guess value is in the eye of the beholder.

I like Muphy and I think he could be a solid part of the Mets’ future success, but I would not be heart broken if the Mets moved him in a good deal.  It will be interesting to see if the Dodgers are successful in their pursuit of Muphy over the next couple of months.
