It is no secret that Jason Bay hasn’t lived up to his end of his contract with the New York Mets. Some people think it is because he is playing for a big city team, and also attribute it to CitiField. However, I think it doesn’t have much to do with either, but really is because he has lost a lot of skill.

So far this season, Jason Bay has three hits in 16 at bats, for a batting average of .188. He has scored twice and has only one run batted in. He only has one extra base hit, and it was a double. People may argue that it is because all of the games have been played at CitiField, and that CitiField is his problem, but that isn’t the case.

Last season, Jason Bay played 64 away games and 59 home games. At home he had 12 doubles, a triple, six home runs, and a batting average of .280. He also had 29 runs batted in. With five more games on the road than at home, he had seven doubles, no triples, six home runs, and a batting average of .215. He also had 28 runs batted in.

A look at the 2010 season reveals the same trend as 2011. He played 44 games at home and 51 games on the road. At home he had 12 doubles, four triples, three home runs, and a batting average of .277. He also had 26 runs batted in. He played in seven more games on the road that year and had eight doubles, two triples, three home runs and a batting average of .243. He also had 21 runs batted in.

People also say that it is the pressure of playing for a big city team, but Jason Bay played well for the Boston Red Sox before joining the New York Mets. 2008 and 2009 were career years for him, and he spent those season with first the Pittburgh Pirates, then the Red Sox for the end of 2008 and all of 2009. So it isn’t the pressure of playing for a big city team.

As I said, I believe the reason that Jason Bay hasn’t played well during his contract with the Mets is that he has lost a lot of skill. So, will he be able to regain the form he had with the Red Sox or the Pirates? I don’t think so. I think this will be his last season in a New York Mets uniform, and that he will have a hard time getting a good contract with a different team.
