The New York Mets had to make a tough decision Monday which will ultimately start their week out on a bad note. The Mets placed shortstop Ruben Tejada on the 15-day disabled list with a right quad strain. An injury that he suffered against the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday when he stumbled and fell on the way to first base.

The Mets are expected to use either Jordany Valdespin or Justin Turner at shortstop while Tejada is on the shelf. The Mets are also expecting that Ronny Cedeno may return later in the week from an intercostal strain he suffered April 21.

Valdespin and Turner have been playing on an off for the team. Valdespin has played seven games for the Mets this season. But in those seven games he has garnered six at-bats and has not gotten a hit. A little more playing time for Valdespin and may be he will right the ship for himself before being demoted to the minors.

As for Turner, he has played in 18 games for the Mets this season. Turner is batting .226/.294/.258. Turner has three RBI on the season as well which is semi-better than Valdespin even though Turner has played in more games. Expect both players to get a chance to prove themselves.

Both of them will have to fill the shoes of Tejada. Tejada has played in 27 games for the Mets this season and is batting .305, so far one of his best seasons yet. He has also driven in eight runs and has crossed the plate 14 times for the Mets.

The Mets are currently 15-13 and are in third in the National League East division.
