STOCKHOLM, Sweden– Despite a late goal from Brad Richards in the final minutes the New York Rangers (0-1-0) fell to the Anaheim Ducks (0-1-0) 2-1 in a shootout.
The Ducks took the lead 9:26 into the game when Andrew Cogliano put a wrister over Henrik Lundqvist after some bad defense left him all by himself in front of the net. The first period was chocked full of penalties both teams combined for 12 penalties and 30 PIM. Despite plenty of powerplays for both teams throughout the game neither could not capitalize and the Rangers finished 0/7 and the Ducks were 0/6.
After no scoring in the second Brad Richards netted his first goal as a Ranger with 2:15 remaining in the game, taking a Ryan McDonagh pass and with very little space to shoot put the puck over the right shoulder of Jonas Hiller.
The game went to a shootout with Lundqvist stopping the Ducks first three shooters Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, and Teemu Selanne before Ducks forward Bobby Ryan mishit a puck on the heel of his stick the still found the back of the net. Artem Anisimov could not put the backhanded attempt past Hiller who wrapped his leg around the post.
The Rangers (0-1-1) will play again next Saturday at 7:00 pm (MSG) when they travel to Vancouver to take on the Vancouver Canucks (0-0-1).
