The New York Rangers took a 2-1 lead in their best of seven series versus the Washington Capitals on the strength of a Marian Gaborik goal that came nearly six hours after the opening faceoff.

Gaborik has been invisible during the series, and virtually the entire playoffs. His goal in triple overtime was his first since game one…versus the Ottawa Senators in round one.

Talk about a good time to bust a slump.

The game became a war of attrition as it moved along, and one of the biggest cheers of the night came when the PA announcer told the weary crowd that the subway was extending it’s hours.

Game three took it’s toll on the players, especially the New York Rangers defense who were forced to log huge minutes, and absorb huge hits throughout the game.

Ryan McDonagh was the busiest Ranger as he played a whopping 53:21 in the game.

The Rangers actually had four defenseman play over 43 minutes in the game while the Capitals only had one defender log over 40 minutes of ice time.

The game was knotted 1-1 after New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan and John Carlson traded goals in the second period.

Both goaltenders were outstanding matching each other save for save over nearly six periods, but Henrik Lundqvist was one better in the end finishing with 45 saves on the night.

The win was Lundqvist’s first playoff overtime win in seven tries. He was 0-2 in OT in the first round against the Senators.

King Henrik seems to have finally found his playoff legs this year, and looks poised to steal every game.

Brad Richards almost became the goat again in game three when he took a tripping penalty with just under four minutes to play in regualtion, but the New York PK came through and allowed him to become a hero when he threw the puck in front to Gabby in 3OT.

The two teams will now enjoy a three day rest as game four won’t go until 12:30 Saturday afternoon in Washington.
