New York Yankees Look to Extend Seattle Mariners Losing Streak
The New York Yankees (59-40) took care of business this weekend against the Oakland Athletics (44-57). They didn’t pull off the sweep, but two out of three ain’t bad. I was a little disappointed that the New York Yankees were not able to finish off their ninth inning comeback in Saturday’s afternoon game, but you can’t really expect a lot of sweeps – not even against the Oakland A’s of the league. A more pressing matter for the New York Yankees is the ineffectiveness of Phil Hughes. He could not make it out of the fifth inning in his start on Friday night. He’s going to be a huge piece down the stretch as the New York Yankees push to secure a playoff spot and it would be nice for him to get into a nice groove.
Season Series vs. A’s
5-1
The Seattle Mariners (43-58) are next up and they are currently riding a franchise worst streak of 15 consecutive losses. There isn’t much that would annoy me more than the Yankees letting the Mariners snap that streak in Yankee Stadium. Unfortunately King Felix is on the hill for one of the games.
Pitching Matchups
Freddy Garcia (8-7, 3.21) vs. Jason Vargas (6-8, 3.94)
CC Sabathia (14-5, 2.62) vs. Doug Fister (3-11, 3.30)
Phil Hughes (1-2, 9.47) vs. Felix Hernandez (8-9, 3.47)
What to Watch
- Phil Hughes – The Yankees need Hughes in his 2010 form – even the second half version would be a major step up at this point. He has a tough task facing off against King Felix, but at least Seattle has a terrible offense. This is the perfect opportunity for Hughes to deliver a prime time performance and erase any thoughts that Brian Cashman has of acquiring a starting pitcher at the deadline.
My Take
Unfortunately, I just don’t think the Yankees will be able to stretch the Mariners’ losing streak to 18 games. Felix Hernandez just has too much success against the Yanks. I do expect to win the first two games of the series though. There really is no excuse for anything less than a series win.
AL (b)East
The Boston Red Sox are stretching their division lead a little bit. They currently sit three games up on the Yanks and host the Kansas City Royals (42-59) this week. Luckily the Tampa Bay Rays are falling away from the pack and sit 6.5 games behind the Yanks in the Wild Card race. They travel to Oakland to face the A’s.
