The San Francisco 49er’s have a short week this week having to face the San Diego Chargers on Thursday night, but the Niners could lose to the surging Chargers and still make the playoffs. However, they would make the playoffs with an embarrassing 7-9 record, becoming the first team in the NFL with a losing record to make the playoffs. Here’s how it a loss and a playoff appearance plays out.
San Francisco- The 49er’s lose to San Diego. They then win out against the St. Louis Rams and the Arizona Cardinals. Final record 7-9.
St. Louis- The Rams lose this week to the Kansas City Chiefs. They lose against the 49er’s and finish with a win over the Seattle Seahawks.Final record 7-9
Seattle- Seattle will lose all three remaining games against the Falcons, Buccaneers and the Rams.Final record 6-10.
Under this scenario, the Niners and Rams would be tied at 7-9 but the Niners would win the division based on the strength of their divisional record 4-2 versus the Rams 3-3.
Of course the best case for the 49er’s would be simply win out the remaining three games but I don’t think the Niners have enough to take the San Diego Chargers in San Diego with a 1-5 road record.
