Carolina Panthers put a request in to speak with a coaching candidate
The Carolina Panthers have put a request in to speak with a replacement for outgoing head coach John Fox. The name which has surfaced according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter is New York Giants defensive coordinator, Perry Fewell. This might come as a surprise to some Carolina Panthers fans, but this is the type of hire that I expect the Panthers to make. A reasonably priced young coach.Standford’s Jim Harbaugh and Arizona Cardinals assistant Russ Grimm have both been linked to the Panthers in rumors as well. This is the first confirmed action by the organization.
A little background about the Fewell who is 48. He has been involved in coaching since 1985 where he started with the North Carolina Tar Heels as a special assistant. In 1998, he made the jump to the NFL spending four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a defensive backs coach. He spend two seasons, 2003-2004 with the St Louis Rams in the same capacity. He then spent 2005 as defensive backs coach with the Chicago Bears.
In 2006 through 2009, Fewell was the defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills and spent time as the Buffalo Bills interim head coach before joining the new York Giants this season as their defensive coordinator.
