Less than 24 hours after I posted that the Saints should be able to keep defensive coordinator Gregg Williams after the team’s poor defensive performance against the Seattle Seahawks in the playoffs, Williams landed an interview with the Denver Broncos.
The Broncos are looking for a head coach to fill the vacancy left when the team fired coach Josh McDaniels in the second half of the season. Williams is scheduled to interview in Denver on Wednesday for the position.
Williams was a head coach in the early 2000’s with the Buffalo Bills, but didn’t last long, which was more due to the dysfunction of the Bills’ franchise than Williams’ coaching. The Broncos have already conducted several interviews, and NFL insiders don’t believe that anyone is a favorite to land their head coaching position as of now.
Losing Williams would be a huge loss for the Saints, whose defenses have drastically improved since he took over as defensive coordinator in 2009. Time will tell how it will play out, but if he were to leave, the Saints would have enormous shoes to fill on their sideline.
