Cards What If’s: Mock Top 5

Obviously, there are a hoard of players that the Cardinals would love to take in this draft.  Unfortunately, it all comes down to who the first four team’s want.

Von Miller looks to be gone unless Buffalo decides to go Cam Newton if he isn’t taken at #1 by the Panthers.  They likely will take either him or Blaine Gabbert.  If the Panthers take Newton (which right now is the popular pick), the Cardinals will have the heartwrenching decision of choosing between a possible franchise quarterback or a guaranteed defensive star and centerpiece for years.  Hmmm . . .

Our readers and Mel Kiper agree that with this pick the Cardinals have to choose the best player available, regardless of need.  That man would be Patrick Peterson.

He has done nothing but impress, and the Cardinals would be lucky to have a cornerback like him patrolling the other side next to Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.  With Greg Toler in the slot, or even a possible move from corner to safety eventually for Peterson, the Cardinals would have one of the most dangerous secondaries in the NFL.

Wilson will hit you, Peterson and DRC can defend relentlessly and take an interception back for six at any time and Kerry Rhodes is one of the best patrollers in the NFL.  The Cardinals would still have a glaring need at outside linebacker if they made this pick, however, they would have a player that can positively impact the game at any time and an incredibly talented secondary.

Not to mention, that DRC would have to step up his play to keep his #1 cornerback status on the team… Watch out opposing wide-outs.

If the Cardinals decide to draft based more on need and take Robert Quinn with this pick, they would be taking a player with great potential.  Quinn can step in and play right away and I think he will be a great player in this league eventually, but he does not possess the lethal talent of Peterson.

What if though, that Denver takes Patrick Peterson with their pick?  They could essentially, go beyond their needs and draft a defensive tackle or defensive end in the second round and take arguably the best player in the draft, Peterson.  Here’s some scenarios:

1. Carolina  – Cam Newton (Auburn)

2. Denver – Marcel Dareus (Alabama)

3. Buffalo – Von Miller (TX A&M)

4. Cincinnati – Blaine Gabbert (Missouri)

5. Arizona – Patrick Peterson (LSU)

It could definitely look like this, as well.

1. Carolina – Blaine Gabbert (Missouri)

2. Denver – Patrick Peterson (LSU)

3. Buffalo – Von Miller (TX A&M)

4. Cincinnati – A.J. Green (Georgia)

5. Arizona – Robert Quinn (N. Carolina)

If Buffalo does not take Von Miller and he is available, he WILL be the Cardinals pick.  However, I do not see him getting past Buffalo.  He is perfect for their 3-4 scheme and would make them a better defense immediately.

We will see on draft day.  Updates, and the rest of the azcardinalsreport.com mock draft first and second rounds coming soon.
