San Diego Chargers Select Illinois DT Corey Liuget in First Round of 2011 NFL Draft

By Dan Parzych

Despite finishing first overall in offense and defense, the San Diego Chargers missed out on the playoffs last season after finishing 9-7 behind the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West. With the 18th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, they decided their best chance at bouncing back to reach the playoffs next season was to focus on defense–which is why they selected Illinois defensive tackle Corey Liuget.

The defensive line is the team’s biggest need and with the addition of Liuget–the Chargers get a guy that can play multiple positions and is great when it comes to stopping the run. Last season, Liuget recorded 63 total tackles to go along with five sacks and it should be interesting to see what type of impact he can have as a rookie in San Diego next season.
