All anyone is talking about is where cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha will play in 2011. Or whether the Eagles will trade quarterback Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals for cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Or whether the Eagles will try to sign a cornerback like Brent Grimes of the Atlanta Falcons.
One fairly successful cornerback on the free agency market hasn’t really been discussed, and that’s cornerback Carlos Rogers of the Washington Redskins.
Rogers, the ninth overall selection by Washington in the 2005 NFL draft, is a free agent and would like to play for another team next season.
In fact, Rogers told 106.7 The Fan that he feels underappreciated for all that he has done with the Redskins.
“I ain’t never discounting the Redskins, but my mindset right now is that it’s time for a change,” he told David Elfin of 106.7 The Fan. “I don’t think I’ve been as appreciated as I should be in that organization, not by everybody. I’ve always been the No. 2 corner, but I’m the one they put on a guy they want to shut down. I just don’t have the interceptions like (current fellow starting corner DeAngelo Hall) has and Shawn (Springs, Hall’s predecessor) used to have.
“My agent’s real confident that I’m going to get a good contract. After [Oakland’s Nnamdi Asomugha], who’s going to get real big money, I’m the next corner out there. You hear that the Cowboys and Eagles are looking for a corner. It would be fun to play against the Redskins twice a year.”
Rogers has had a solid career, judging by the numbers. He’s right–he doesn’t get the interceptions that Hall does and Springs did. But he’s fantastic at deflecting passes. He had 24 in 2008, and has topped 12 four times.
The only problem is that Rogers is fairly old. He’s going to be 30 in July. In fact, he is four days older than Oakland’s Nnamdi Asomugha.
He’s also probably not the second best cornerback on the free agent market. Atlanta’s Brent Grimes is pretty good (pretty underrated also).
It remains to be seen whether the Eagles go after Rogers but I still believe that they will trade Kevin Kolb for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
