Jaguars Run Defense Struggles Without Knighton

After watching yesterday’s performance by the Jaguars defense, I would vote for Terrance Knighton as the team’s defensive MVP.

Despite only surrendering 14 points in a crushing loss to the Cleveland Browns, the Jaguars had perhaps their worst performance of the season yesterday.

The most alarming stat from the game was the amount of rushing yards the Jaguars surrendered. Coming into the game, the Browns were averaging under 100 yards per game on the ground, but they managed a season high 148 yards rushing against the Jaguars.

Even more alarming was the fact that the Browns were so successful running the football with their third-string running back Chris Ogbonnaya. Between Ogbonnaya and quarterback Colt McCoy, the Browns were averaging 5.3 yards per carry.

The absence of Knighton certainly left a tremendous void in the middle of the Jaguars defense. His presence in the middle allows the linebackers that play behind him to run to the ball carrier without having to deal with blockers and that was something the Jaguars sorely missed yesterday.

Knighton has already said that he plans to play this week when the Jaguars host the Houston Texans. The Jaguars will need him to help slow down the NFL’s second best rushing offense.
