Clearing Up the NFC East as Cowboys, Giants, and Eagles Compete for the Division Title

By Marian Hinton

For the past few weeks, it was assumed that the race for the NFC East title and the division’s playoff berth would come down to the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants, but the Philadelphia Eagles aren’t done yet.

Though the Cowboys are in the driver’s seat, the race isn’t over yet. With a division title and a playoff berth on the line, things are heating up, and it could, and likely will, come down to the final game of the regular season. Both the Giants and Cowboys hold their fate in their own hands, but the Eagles, with a little help, could surprise us all.

With the Cowboys and Eagles picking up some nice wins this weekend and the Giants suffering a disappointing loss, here are the current NFC East standings with just two weeks remaining in the regular season.

1. Dallas Cowboys (8-6, 2-2): Up next the Cowboys host the Eagles then travel to New York to face the Giants.

2. New York Giants (7-7, 2-3): On Sunday, the Giants will face the Jets in a “road game”, then will take on the Cowboys at home.

3. Philadelphia Eagles (6-8, 3-1): Next weekend, the Eagles will travel to Dallas, then will host the Washington Redskins.

4. Washington Redskins (5-9, 1-3): While the Redskins cannot win the NFC East, their final game against the Eagles could have an impact on the final division standings.

Things that must happen for the Cowboys to win the division:

With both the Eagles and Giants remaining on their schedule, if the Dallas Cowboys win out, they win the NFC East and are therefore headed to the postseason.

If the Cowboys drop their game against the Eagles, they will still have a chance to win the division, but they would have to beat the Giants, assuming the Giants beat the Jets next weekend. If the Giants lose to the Jets, then the Cowboys simply have to win one of their next two games.

Things that must happen for the Giants to win the division:

If the Giants win out, they’re in because they’ll hold the tie-breaker over the Cowboys.

If the Giants lose to the Jets, all 3 of the following must happen:

a) Eagles must beat Dallas b) the Redskins must beat the Eagles c) Giants must beat Dallas

Things that must happen for the Eagles to win the division:

If the Eagles win out, they must hope that the Giants beat the Cowboys but lose to the Jets. In this case, the Eagles will hold the tiebreaker over both teams. Though the Eagles and Giants split the series, the Eagles would get the nod with a better division record.

If the Eagles drop one game, they’re out.

Hold on fans; it’s going to be a crazy couple of weeks. There is a division title and a playoff berth on the line.

This, my friends, is exactly what football is all about.
