Report: Vikings Toby Gerhart has torn MCL
The laundry list of issues facing the Minnesota Vikings just grew a bit longer. According to the St Paul Pioneer Press, Running back Toby Gerhart tore his MCL in Sunday’s loss to the Bears. As if the Vikings don’t have enough issues in the backfield with Adrian Peterson already on the shelf, Gerhart’s injury will just add stress to an already question filled off-season.
Gerhart had a pretty decent year, rushing for 531 yards on 109 carries, with 1 TD. Gerhart seems to be a good fit to back up Peterson. He is a big powerful, north/south runner, and provides the Vikings a good change of pace when he’s in the game. I don’t see his role ever changing in his NFL career, he doesn’t seem to have the makeup of a feature back, but one area of his game I think has potential is his pass catching. In 2011 Gehart caught 23 ball for 190 yards, and 3 TDs. If the Vikings can continue to expand this, they may have something. Gerhart has the build of tight end and could be a valuable possession and goal line receiver in 2012.
I have no doubt that Gerhart and Peterson will be ready to go for the Vikings week 1 in 2012, but you know it’s bad for the Vikings when you think, it’s just an MCL tear…
