2012 NFL Playoffs: New Orleans Saints secure 3rd seed in NFC

By Alejandro Aviles

With
the 2012 NFL Playoffs starting this Saturday, January 7th, 2012 the
New Orleans Saints have secured the 3rd seed in the NFC and will
play the 6th Detroit Lions on Saturday, January 7, 2012. In the
teams’ regular season meeting the Saints beat the Lions 31-17 as Drew Brees
threw for 342 yards to go along with 3 touchdowns. The wildcard game will not
be easy for either team but if I were to give the edge to anyone I would have
to give it to the Saints. The Saints will be playing at home in front of their
“Who-dat” nation and Drew Brees has had the best season of his career. The
Saints have a high-octane offense that seems to score at will and if they can
run up the scoreboard they should be able to secure a win.

However, the Lions have also been able
to put up their share of points this season and have been averaging 29.6 points
a game, good enough for 4th best in the league. Like Brees, Matthew
Stafford has thrown for over 5,000 yards this season and has proven that he can
shine in big games. The Lions should be able to put up a good fight and put
some points on the board and the Lions will also have Ndamukong
Suh this time around (was suspended in the regular season meeting).

Even though the
Lions have a good quarterback and good defense I still think it will be
difficult to get a win against Brees and the Saints. The Lions are still a very
young team and while Stafford has the potential to shine in big games he has
yet to play a game of this magnitude in his career. I still believe that the
game will not be easy for the Saints but with their Super Bowl experience and
Brees having an MVP like season I believe they can beat the Lions and make
another Super Bowl run.
