Tough road ahead for the Chargers in 2012

By Kenny Gardner

The San Diego Chargers have five games against teams that finished the 2011 season with a losing record.  This includes home games against the Kansas City Chiefs and Carolina Panthers, while they face the Chiefs on the road as well as the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  These teams had a combined record of 21-43 last season which is a .328 winning percentage.  The Chargers were 5-0 against teams with losing records at the time they played them in 2011.  This included wins against the Chiefs, Dolphins, Broncos, Jaguars and Bills.

San Diego will be challenged by nine teams and 11 games against teams that finished the 2011 season with at least a .500 winning percentage.  They have home games against the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons.  San Diego has road games against the Broncos, Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints and New York Jets.  These teams finished 2011 with a combined record of 89-55 which is a .618 winning percentage.  The Lightning Bolts went 3-8 against teams in 2011 with at least a .500 winning percentage at the time they played them.  This included wins against the Vikings, Ravens and Raiders.  San Diego lost games against the Patriots, Jets, Chiefs, Packers, Raiders, Bears, Broncos and Lions.

San Diego’s home and road splits against these teams with at least .500 winning percentages were 2-3 at home, and 1-5 on the road. Free agency and the NFL Draft have the potential to change teams, so San Diego could be looking at a stronger strength of schedule, the same strength of schedule or a weaker strength of schedule when the 2012 season begins.  If the Chargers are to overcome this potential schedule, they will have to avoid their inconsistencies from 2008, 2010 and 2011.
