Bears Retain Kahlil Bell; Marion Barber to be Cut?
According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears have tendered a 1-year offer to running back Kahlil Bell who was a restricted agent. That will pay Bell 1.26 million in 2012. The Bears had until tomorrow at 3 p.m central to tender him a contract.
Bell is only 25 years old and last year, he showed that he could be a good running back in the NFL. Bell was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Minnesota Vikings in 2009 and was eventually released by the Vikings the same year. The Bears picked him up that year and signed him to their practice squad. In November of 2009, Bell was promoted to the active roster replacing injured RB Garrett Wolf. Bell eventually took the spot of Wolf whom was released by the Bears at a later date.
Bell received a lot of playing time in 2011 to show what he can do on the field with the injuries to Matt Forte and Marion Barber. In 2011, Bell had 337 yards on 79 attempts. Bell also had 1 touchdown, but it was a receiving touchdown. The one thing Bell has to work on is to hold onto the ball, Bell had 3 fumbles last year.
With the new 1-year contract for Bell, does that mean the Bears will cut Marion Barber? Vaughn Mcclure of the Chicago Tribune says Marion Barber is telling folks he won’t be back. He also moved out of his Chicago-area apartment.
The Bears signed Marion Barber to a 2-year contract worth 5 million on July 30th, 2011. So … Barber still has 1 year left on his contract. Barber came to training camp to compete for a spot on the Bears active roster. Barber eventually out beat Chester Taylor for the 2nd string job. Taylor was released at a later date.
The main reason Chicago fans are not on the Barber bandwagon is because of the Denver Bronco game. Where Barber could have run out of the time, but ran out of bounds and when the Bears were close to scoring in overtime, Barber fumbled the ball. The Denver Broncos eventually won that game and the lost was blame on Barber.
I didn’t think Barber did too bad last year, besides that game, but he was too injury prone and that’s his major downfall. In 2011, Barber had 422 yards on 114 attempts.
It looks like the Bears will cut Barber and give the back-up job to Kahlil Bell. Instead of signing a free-agent RB … the Bears have learn their less with the fail signing of Chester Taylor and now Marion Barber.
Don’t forget, it’s about to get fun around 3 p.m. central tomorrow!
