In one of the more surprising cuts just before the official start of the 2012 league year, the Houston Texans cut loose starting right tackle Eric Winston, who instantly becomes of the best tackles available this offseason.
The New York Jets would love to upgrade from Wayne Hunter, I would imagine, and having a guy like Winston suddenly come available is a huge development in what was otherwise a weak market for offensive tackles.
Yes, this is the second installment of an unnamed series of posts I’ll tentatively call “Jon thinks the Jets should sign this guy,” with the first being Dallas Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett.
Winston is a much more accomplished player at his position than Bennett is, and I expect interest to be high in the 28-year-old former Miami Hurricane.
The good folks at Pro Football Focus offered their take on Winston’s release, and it was that of utter shock. It’s very puzzling that Houston would let go off such a good player.
Winston is a dual threat tackle, he’s good at both run blocking and pass protection. Houston’s loss is going to be a big gain for whoever signs him.
Hopefully, the Jets can get in on the Eric Winston sweepstakes. Chances are he won’t be available for long.
