2012 NFL Draft Detroit Lions Should Draft Brandon Washington
The Detroit Lions as well as NFL analysts have made it no secret: the Lions need to draft offensive linemen in the 2012 draft. There have not been many conversations about the Lions drafting Brandon Washington, offensive guard and tackle for the University of Miami Hurricanes .
The Lions need to give their offensive line some depth. Dominic Railoa and Jeff Backus have played together for 11 years. They are now on the downside of their careers and the Lions need to be ready to replace them. Jim Schwartz would like to have an offensive lineman such as Washington that has the versatility to play both guard and tackle. Washington is very strong with the ability to move defensive linemen around to open lanes for Jahvid Best and other running backs.
The Lions must help Washington work on his method. When blocking, he is not to give the defensive linemen the upper hand, and lose ground. The Lions have a franchise quarterback in Matthew Stafford. They must do whatever necessary to protect him. Washington has the smarts and quickness to go along with great aggressiveness to be a great offensive lineman. He just needs to listen to his coaches and fellow offensive linemen.
Some scouts project Brandon Washington to go as high as a mid second round pick; others do not. The Detroit Lions have other needs to fill in the first couple rounds. The Lions could wait or trade down, and Washington could be available later in the draft. Washington needs a little improvement on his technique but his strength and abilities are the kind needed to be an offensive lineman to Stafford; providing years of protection.
