The Green Bay Packers lost veteran center Scott Wells to free agency and desperately need to find a good replacement. Who better to replace one solid veteran with another in Jeff Saturday? ESPN’s Adam Schefter reportedly stated on SportsCenter Monday morning the Packers have scheduled a meeting with the center.
The former Indianapolis Colts offensive lineman hiked the ball to Peyton Manning for his entire 13 NFL seasons with the team. There would be no better center to replace Wells with than Saturday who is regarded as one of the positions best players in the game.
Green Bay’s general manager is not known for spending big money in free agency or signing veteran players in their mid-30s to long-term deals. However, the Packers must put a quality, intelligent player at the position and there are few better than Saturday. There is no doubt he would be great for MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers as well as help teach the mostly young offensive line how to play the game correctly.
If Saturday would be willing to sign a one-year deal there is not a doubt in my mind Thompson would go for it. The only problem is the Denver Broncos will most likely do whatever it takes to bring Saturday to Mile High after signing Peyton Manning. The Broncos want Manning to be as comfortable as possible in their system which would mean bringing Saturday along for the ride.
