Sources have reported that the Detroit Lions have given Stephen Tulloch a five year contract extension. Signing Stephen Tulloch is the right move. He is young and a very talented Linebacker that will be a big part of the Detroit Lions future.
Stephen Tulloch signed a one year contract with the Lions in 2011. He made 111 tackles and 84 of them were solo. He’s a force on the defense that the Detroit Lions will need if they want reach the playoffs and further. By bringing back Stephen Tolluch the Lions made clear that they want to improve their rushing and passing defense, that was ranked at the bottom of the NFL in 2011.
The Detroit Lions have to realize though that re-signing Stephen Tulloch does not mean they are done with bringing in players to help make the Detroit Lions defense better. Their passing secondary and their run defense was burned many times by opponents in 2011.
If the Detroit Lions want to contend for the Super Bowl they need to do more to address these areas. If not we will see another blow out early playoff exit like the Detroit Lions had against the New Orleans Saints. The Detroit Lions will need to use the 2012 NFL Draft and free agency to improve these areas of weakness.
The Detroit Lions are a very young and talented team. They may not be able to make all the moves this offseason to make the Detroit Lions Super Bowl winners in 2012. They are moving in the right Direction though, by the restructuring some of their star contracts. Giving Contract extensions to Calvin Johnson and Stephen Tulloch, and others. The Detroit Lions are locking up their talent. So they can contend for the Super Bowl not for the just the 2012 season but for many years to come.
