Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has advanced to the round of eight in the fans’ online voting for the NFL player featured on the cover of Madden ’13, the most popular NFL video game.
The Madden curse has been made famous over the years, because typically whoever is featured goes on to get injured or have a year far worse than the year before.
Does Cam want to risk a sophmore slump to be on the cover?
Newton meet Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald in the next round. The other quarterfinal matchups are 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis vs. Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers vs. Ravens running back Ray Rice, and Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski vs. Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson.
The winner will be featured on millions of copies of the video game, and see if they can overcome the Madden curse.
The curse has affected every cover subject since 1999 to some degree: a broken ankle that kept 1999 cover subject Garrison Hearst out for two seasons, 2004 Michael Vick breaking his leg and later being convicted in a dogfighting scheme, and 2008’s Vince Young quickly falling out of favor with his coach and fans.
Should Cam Newton hope that fans don’t vote him on? And if you are a Panthers fan, shouldn’t you be voting like crazy for Fitzgerald?
Cam recently had the best rookie quarterback season ever, surpassing Peyton Manning’s rookie year passing yardage and rushing for more touchdowns than any quarterback in NFL history. He was voted NFC Offensive Rookie of the Year and voted into the Pro Bowl after Eli Manning advanced to the Super Bowl, making him ineligible.
