As the days trickle down to the NFL 2012 Draft, everyone’s excited, including the Washington Redskins’ DeAngelo Hall.
Look, I’m just as excited as you are. Don’t get me wrong on this: I’m waiting on a good quarterback to lead the Burgundy and Gold back to the playoffs and more. However, I can’t help but be patient and watchful. I think I have Donovan McNabb to thank for that.
You know, that guy that’s hatin’ on RG3. The QB everyone thought was “The One” ?
When Donovan McNabb was announced as the new Redskins quarterback, everyone was hyped. There were 30-second commercials, jerseys everywhere you shopped.
And then the bottom fell out, right to third string. Doe’s this make celebrating wrong? Of course not. All I’m saying is to have a little patience and just wait for it. This guy has a lot to learn and in very little time. He’s coming into a very high-stressed situation where the past couple of QBs have done a substantial job at making everyone look towards the next year for better. The past couple of QBs have redefined how I sigh and how I scream at the TV during the last two minutes of every game. The past couple of QBs have made me realize I should not have a shoe nearby when I’m ready to hurl things at the screen.
They did the same to you. Reminds me of another person in a similar situation RG3′s in now: Neo.
“The function of the One is now to return to the source, allowing a temporary dissemination of the code you carry, reinserting the prime program. After which you will be required to select from the matrix 23 individuals, 16 female, 7 male, to rebuild Zion. Failure to comply with this process will result in a cataclysmic system crash killing everyone connected to the matrix, which coupled with the extermination of Zion will ultimately result in the extinction of the entire human race.” -The Architect/The Matrix Reloaded
The last couple of Washington Redskins QBs have redefined the phrase, “You’ve gotta be kidding me”. RG3′s predecessors have paved the way for him to also have the chance to do something they failed to do: Rise to the level of greatness in the midst of complete chaos.
“Humph. Hope, it is the quintessential human delusion, simultaneously the source of your greatest strength, and your greatest weakness.” -The Architect/The Matrix Reloaded
So let’s not crown him yet. Just as Arthur had to pull the sword from the stone to be king, RG3 will have to pull a playoff birth from the grounds of FedEx Field.
Celebrate with objectivity and you won’t get burned this time. Remember, we’ve done this song and dance before. I know, I know, I don’t want to compare RG3 to anything Donovan McNabb has done. I’m not. What I’m comparing is our reaction to their arrivals. Give the guy some space to breathe before you drop the entire franchise on his shoulders. That plan has not been well received…at all. Like Neo, we have the love of the game and the excitement for change that fills us all. However, reality must catch up with that…eventually.
Let’s not crown him Prince. Let’s not make him “The One”. Let’s just make him the next Washington Redskins Quarterback.
