Will Robert Meachem have a breakout season with San Diego?
The San Diego Chargers signed wide receiver Robert Meachem to a four year deal worth $25.9 million on March 13, 2012. Meachem was tied with Marques Colston in 2009 for the New Orleans Saints team lead with nine touchdown receptions and was third on their roster with 722 receiving yards. Meachem was third on the team in receiving yards with 638 in 2010 and tied for third in TD receptions with five. Meachem had 40 receptions for 620 receiving yards and six TD receptions in 2011 due in part to the emergence of Jimmy Graham and New Orleans made Darren Sproles a focal point of their offense since he was second on the team with 86 receptions.
Meachem averages 16 yards per reception for his career and is a rock in terms of staying healthy because he played in all 48 regular season games the last three seasons and all six playoff games the last three seasons for New Orleans. Meachem’s best playoff game came in a win against the Detroit Lions during the 2011 season when he had four receptions for 111 yards and a TD. Meachem could be the main focus in San Diego’s aerial attack at times because Malcom Floyd missed five games in 2010 and four games in 2011 while Antonio Gates missed six games in 2010 and three games in 2011.
Vincent Jackson had 60 receptions for 1,106 receiving yards and nine TD receptions in 2011. I do not expect Meachem to be this productive, but he will have the opportunity to have a breakout season. One thing is for sure, this will be his best chance to have a breakout season since he came to the NFL in 2007.
