Wide receiver will be an interesting spot for the New York Giants as we are less than a week away from the NFL Draft. Everyone thought that with the loss of Steve Smith to the Philadelphia Eagles, that the Giants receiving corps would take a major hit. Victor Cruz said no. Cruz emerged as a Salsa Dancing star and emerged as a huge weapon on the Giants Super Bowl run. Cruz and Hakeem Nicks make quite a one-two combo. Nicks is 24 years old and is coming off of his second straight 1,000 yard season. He’s tough, plays through a lot of injuries, and will get PAID when his contract his up.
After that, its a lot of unproven players. Mario Manningham is gone. The Giants like to run a lot of three receiver sets. One of the players who may fill that role is Jerrel Jernigan. Jernigan was a third round pick in last year’s draft and it may be his time to take more of a role in the offense. Domenik Hixon is another player who should contribute. Hixon has missed most of the last two seasons tearing his ACL twice. Another guy to watch is Ramses Barden. Barden has fought through injuries and hasn’t played that much, but this could be a year he becomes a factor. That third spot is up for grabs and a tall receiver like him could be a huge asset.
I would not be shocked if the Giants grab a receiver at some point in the draft to help out. I would expect it more towards the 4th round or so. Ty Hilton from Florida International could be the pick. Hilton is a speedster and can also help in the kick return game. He had over 1,000 yards receiving and when every team in the NFL attends your pro day workout, you know that he’s a legitimate NFL prospect.
