Denver Broncos Interested in Philadelphia Eagles Cornerback Asante Samuel

By Bryn Swartz

It’s no secret that the Philadelphia Eagles have been shopping four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel this offseason.

After all, the team has Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, both former Pro Bowlers, as their starters for next season, and they’ll also probably use a high draft pick on a cornerback.

The Denver Broncos have been revealed to be interested in Samuel. They have reportedly offered a late round draft pick, likely a fifth or a sixth, as well as a veteran player.

Before any speculation starts, that player cannot be Brian Dawkins. He is a free agent and is not even on the Broncos’ roster. Who the player is remains a mystery.

Samuel’s contract pays him $10 million in 2012, plus a $100,000 workout bonus in the offseason, and $11.5 million in 2013, plus a $100,000 workout bonus in 2013.

Personally, I find 31-year old Asante Samuel to be worth a LOT more than a late round draft pick and a veteran player. I think he’s as valuable as any 31-year old defensive player in the league right now. I want at least a third round pick for him. I don’t even think a second round pick would be ridiculous. This is a player who was the best cornerback in the NFL as recently as 2010.
