2012 NFL Draft: Santonio Holmes Says New York Jets Need Offensive Linemen, Wide Recievers

We’re just hours away from the 2012 NFL Draft.

Who will the New York Jets select on Thursday, on day 1 of the draft? There’s certainly plenty of possibilities.

They could go with a pass rusher with the 16th overall pick, such as Courtney Upshaw or Melvin Ingram. Maybe they’ll take a safety, like Mark Barron.

Certainly the University of Alabama has no shortage of first-round prospects. Maybe they’ll trade up to try to get Trent Richardson, although I think that’s a bit of a longshot.

The Jets have ten selections in this year’s draft, so they can afford to go with the best player available on Thursday and fill the rest of their needs on Friday and Saturday.

Wide receiver Santonio Holmes is excited for the Jets to turn the page on a disappointing 2011 season and start 2012 off on the right foot.

Speaking at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports complex, where he’s has been working out with Mark Sanchez and a few other teammates, Holmes shared his thoughts about the upcoming draft.

“We’re looking for a few offensive linemen, some guys that are ready to come in and play right away,” said Holmes. “We need a few more receivers to give Mark more weapons to throw the ball to.”

Right now, Holmes and tight end Dustin Keller are two of Sanchez’s biggest returning targets. Patrick Turner and free agent addition Chaz Schilens are also on board.

It wouldn’t be too surprising to see the Jets add a few more receivers and linemen with their seven picks on Saturday, so Holmes may get his wish.

“Guys are ready to go, man,” Holmes said. “We’re looking forward to a big season this year and, hopefully, make it to the playoffs, finishing off with the right things, holding that trophy.”

The foundation for those February triumphs begin in April. Soon enough, the Jets will be on the clock. Hopefully, for their sake, they come out of this weekend with a draft class worth talking about.
