Breaking Down Before the Draft: New York Giants Defensive Line
The Giants defensive line has been the strength of the team for years. Pass rush has been what has made this team successful over the past few years. The Giants are four deep at defensive end with Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Jason Pierre-Paul and Matthias Kiwanuka. Kiwanuka will be a hybrid kind of player with time at linebacker too. Dave Tollefson is gone so look for Justin Trattou to possibly get some of the snaps that Tollefson used to get.
The defensive tackle position has a lot of depth as well. Chris Canty showed why Jerry Reese brought him in and signed him and during the Super Bowl run, Canty made a lot of plays. Linval Joseph played well in his first full year of action. The guy to watch is Marvin Austin. Austin hasn’t played in basically two years because of suspension in college and an injury last year. When he did play in college, he showed some ability and there’s a reason why the Giants made him a second round pick.
It wouldn’t be crazy for the Giants to draft a pass rusher especially if one drops to them at 32. If Chandler Jones or Nick Perry is there and at the top of the draft board they will pick them. If Jerel Worthy is there at 32 and on the top of their board they will pick them. The Giants will get another young lineman at some point especially with the NASCAR package being so important to their scheme.
