Chicago Bears Select WR Alshon Jeffery and S Brandon Hardin
In day 2 of the NFL draft, the Chicago Bears traded up 5 spots with the St. Louis Rams and drafted South Carolina wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. The Bears were originally the 50th pick, but moved up to the 45th pick. The Bears swap 2nd round picks and also sent the Rams a 5th round pick.
Alshon Jeffery has tons of potential and is another tall receiver for Jay Cutler as he’s 6 foot, 3 inches. Before the 2011 season, Jeffery was a first round pick. So … if he entered the draft last year, he could have been waiting in the green room to hear his named announced in the 1st round. Jeffery said the reason for his drop in stats was South Carolina became more of a running team. Jeffery also, said he has great hands that stand out and he has a great work ethic. Jeffery is 22 years old.
As of right now, the Bears have 8 wide receivers under contract … Brandon Marshall, Devin Hester, Earl Bennett, Eric Weems, Devin Thomas, Johnny Knox, Dane Sanzenbacher and now Alshon Jeffery. Teams usually only carry 5 to 6 receivers. Well … it looks like Sanzenbacher will be gone and Know could miss the 2012 season. At the very least, miss the beginning of the 2012 season (PUP). So, there’s the your 6 wide receivers.
With the 79th pick in the 3rd round, the Chicago Bears select Oregon State Safety Brandon Hardin. The Bears did do their work on Hardin, they brought him in for a pre-draft visit to check his medical records. He may be able to play cornerback for the Bears too. Hardin missed the whole 2011 season, but was able to play in the Shrime Game. So … he is ready and ready to contribute to the Bears.
Hardin will join a safety group of Major Wright, Craig Steltz and Chris Conte. Hardin was Oregon State’s Free Safety, at least during his 3 first years there. The Bears continue to add size as he is 6 feet, 3 inches and is tough. In shocking news, Hardin is expected to be a great special teams player.
In other news, the Bears have drafted a safety every year Lovie Smith has been the head coach. They’ve drafted a safety 10 out of the last 11 drafts. Also, the last 3 years they’ve drafted a safety in the 3rd round … Major Wright, Chris Conte and now Brandon Hardin.
Tomorrow will be the final day of the NFL draft, the Bears will pick in the 4th, 6th and 7th rounds. Barring that the Bears do not make any trades.
