The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted guard David DeCastro number 24 overall. Naturally he received a phone call to congratulate him and let him know their plans. However, on the other end of the call was a two-time Super Bowl champion and the man DeCasto was drafted to protect. The Stanford guard was getting a congratulatory call from Ben Roethlisberger.
DeCastro answered and Roethlisberger welcomed him to the team and you won’t believe the rooks response. “Did you get those flight plans?”
DeCastro thought Roethlisberger was the team’s traveling coordinator booking his flight to Pittsburgh for his introductory press conference. Somehow when Big Ben said hello, he either failed to introduce himself or the rook is going to need to check his ears.
“He was saying, ‘Did you get those flight plans? Did you get those flight plans?”’ Roethlisberger told a group at the Blair County Convention Center this weekend. After a few seconds, Decastro figured out his big, big mistake.
“I can’t wait once we get started to get on him about that,” Roethlisberger joked, ensuring that DeCastro will never live this terrible decision down.
DeCastro is one of the multiple draft picks that was drafted to play right away for his new team. Knowing this, the Steelers was surprised he slipped all the way down to 24.
“We didn’t think David would be here, we valued him that high,” Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said after the team was done in the first round. “We said earlier there are a few special players in this group. He was one of them. He’s a great player with excellent intangibles — character, tough, leader, smart.”
Congrats to the Steelers on getting their man, and I’m so sorry to David. He is going to get hazed like never before.
Lesson of the day: Check who is on the other end of the phone.
