The 2012 season is looking a lot like 2011 so far. If the New York Giants keep getting injured like this, maybe they can repeat as Super Bowl Champions. First, Brian Weatherspoon tore his ACL for the second straight season and will mis the entire 2012 season. Today came a bigger blow. Hakeem Nicks will now miss the next three months with a broken bone in his foot. Nicks will have surgery Friday to repair the bone. An already thin receiving corps just got a little bit thinner.
The draft pick of Rueben Randle became more important, especially now with Nicks being injured. Randle will need to play a bigger role in the offense, especially early on in the season. Yes Nicks will be back three months from now which is late August and it’s better that this happens now rather than later on in the season. Nicks will be coming back in late August and needs to work on things like conditioning and being able to get in and out of his cuts. It’s not like he broke a bone in his hand and can still work on his conditioning.
The injury to Nicks will force players like Jerrel Jernigan and Ramses Barden to step up and play a bigger role throughout training camp. Look for the Giants to probably bring back Michael Clayton to provide depth. I don’t see them going out and signing a guy like Plaxico Burress or Braylon Edwards because of this. If Nicks was out for a longer period of time, it might be a possibility, however that’s not the Giants way. Nicks will be come back from this, however you do have to question how effective he will be this season, at least to start it.
