Chad Ochocinco is coming off of the worst year of his career. After ten years staring for the Cincinnati Bengals, Ochocinco seems to be approaching the backend of his impressive career. But even though his playing skills have diminished, the six-time pro bowler is still always a story.
Ochocinco is known just as much for his off-field antics as he is his reputation as one of the game’s top receivers. His touchdown celebrations have only been matched by those of Terrell Owens. He’s been fined and threatened by the NFL for such antics as using props to celebrate and tweeting during games.
In 2008, Chad Johnson decided that he wanted to wear the name “Ochocinco” on the back of his jersey because his number is 85. When the NFL said he had to wear his last name on the back of his jersey, he legally changed his name to Ochocinco.
In 2011 when the star signed with the New England Patriots to replace the departed Randy Moss, he tweeted about how he was looking for a place to stay in Boston. He told the local media that he’d be staying with a fan for the first few weeks of the season while he got used to the area. The only requirements were that the tenant must have internet access and an Xbox.
After a disastrous 2011 season in which the receiver produced the worst statistics of his career he decided to do something for his teammates. Just before the team made their trip to Indianapolis for Super Bowl XLVI, Ochocinco bought each player on the team a pair of Beat by Dre headphones which costs a total of $28,000. Even with an injured star tight end and a Super Bowl rematch from 2007, the receiver made headlines.
This week Ochocinco was making headlines one more time after he was robbed of his wallet Wednesday. First Ochocinco tweeted about the unfortunate loss of his credit cards, money, and most importantly, his Starbucks Gold Card. The receiver then added a video showing his disappointment with the loss.
Big time receivers usually come with big time egos. They tend to be the most outspoken and controversial figures in the game today. However, no personality sticks out more than Chad Ochocinco. Even when he’s struggling on the field, he still tends to create headlines. This week’s stunt was just one more example of that.
