RG3: Washington Redskins Quarterback And More
It reminds me of what Rapper Jay-Z said in his song, “Diamonds Are Forever”: “I’m not a businessman/ I’m a business, man.”
If you’re keeping up with all the news and blogs about Robert Griffin’s performance at the first week of camp you probably missed, or disregarded, his wearing of one yellow glove. Significant? Of course not. Does it have a story? Yep. According to RG3, he “was a huge Michael Jackson fan growing up…”
Thrilling news or not (yeah an MJ pun), it’s one of those fun details you can grab when you hear it. This may explain another noticeable trait: His socks. But this is just part of the branding of RG3 in the NFL.
Griffin created an LLC, entitled Thr3escompany. In January, Griffin filed applications for trademarking RGIII, RG3, Robert Griffin III and the phrase “Unbelievably Believable.”
Griffin’s company specified in the trademark applications that his monikers would be used on shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, pants, shorts, footwear, hats, caps and athletic uniforms.
The phrase “Unbelievably Believable” is a reference to his Heisman Trophy ceremony speech. He said, “This is unbelievably believable. It’s unbelievable because in the moment we’re all amazed when great things happen. But it’s believable because great things don’t happen without hard work.”
He’s a Third, but he’s also First
He may be the third man in his family to be named Robert Griffin, but he’s the first in the NFL to bear Roman numerals. This will be the first time in history that roman numerals have decorated a player’s jersey in the NFL, and any other sport for that matter.
At this point I’m not sure what’s going to be bigger: RG3 the brand or RG3 the Quarterback. I think it’s great. You’ve got to market yourself when the time is right.
