Jon Beason may have taken his first and only hit on Alex Smith this year, since the two men don’t play a regular season game against each other this year. Beason wrote on twitter, “Alex smith, don’t hate on Cam (because) your stats would’ve gotten u cut if Peyton decided to come 2 San Fran. Truth b told. That’s after a 13-3 yr.” The Panthers faithful have high hopes this year, and a quarterback who has said his improvement is through the roof compared to last year. If Cam Newton’s stat are “through the roof” from last year, then we could be talking about one of the greatest ever.
If Newton has diminished stats or an injury this season, then Newton will be answering questions all year about a Sophmore Slump.
Alex Smith last Wednesday said in defense of the 49ers 29th ranked passing yards per game that, “I could absolutely care less on yards per game,” Smith told a group of reporters. “I think that is a totally overblown stat because if you’re losing games in the second half, guess what, you’re like the Carolina Panthers and you’re going no-huddle the entire second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games. That’s great. You’re not winning, though.”
Both of these guys are making a pretty fair point. I definitely would rather win 13 games than 6 games in Alex Smith’s defense, but in Beason’s defense I would definitely rather have Cam Newton at quarterback than Alex Smith. It’s a shame these guys don’t play this year; we’ll just have to wait for either the playoffs or next year.
