Keeping Donald Driver Was Right Move for Packers
Donald Driver has been with the Green Bay Packers for his entire career and he has been great for the organization on and off the field.
Going into this offseason, it had been said that the Packers might release the Packer great. Driver may be 37 years old, but he still has value to the Packers as a wide receiver and as a leader. He clearly is not the same receiver that he used to be in his prime, but that doesn’t mean Green Bay has to release him.
Driver knows that he is not the same player he used to be and he is okay with that. He knows that his role is being a slot receiver or even a number four receiver. The people who have said that the Packers should let Driver go were saying that because he is not a force like he was for most of his career. Well, of course he isn’t, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve to be on an NFL roster.
Another good reason for keeping Driver is the fact that Aaron Rodgers has faith in him. If things are down for the Packers offense, Rodgers will look for Driver as that safety net he needs to move the chains. Just look at last year’s playoff loss to the New York Giants, most of the receivers that day kept dropping the football. Driver was the only receiver getting open and making plays and keeping the Packers in the game.
He is a reliable player who will always have the dedication to play the game the right way and give 100 percent every time he is on the field. Having that kind of player in the locker room is always good to have. If other players continue to see the work ethic and the humility that Driver puts into his game, it will become contagious.
In a time where more and more NFL players and athletes across all sports are getting in trouble with the law, Driver has remained out of trouble. His leadership and great citizenship is something that is needed to create a great atmosphere in the locker room. Combine that with his ability to teach this young receiving crops how to play wide receiver and Driver has proven that he deserves a spot on the roster.
It will be interesting to see how Driver will be used in the Packers offense this season, but one thing for sure is that Driver will make multiple key plays throughout the season.
