New York Jets Linebacker Aaron Maybin Puts On Weight Thanks To Olympic Swimmer Michael Phelps

Aaron Maybin came out of nowhere last season to help the New York Jets and their iffy pass rush.  Maybin was originally selected by the Buffalo Bills but could not stick there.  His play with the Jets was great, but Maybin was not satisfied.  In fact, he put on some extra weight to become a three down player.  The man who helped him with the weight gain was none other than Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps.

Yes, Aaron Maybin and Michael Phelps are neighbors.  Maybin spent some time observing the diet of Phelps in hopes of helping him add some good weight.  Maybin weight 229 last year, but he looks to play at about 250 this coming season.  If he is able to maintain his speed, he will be a force for the Jets.

“Having a little bit of extra weight on you, it helps you deal with the ground and pound of the season and all that kind of stuff,” Maybin said, via Brian Costello of the New York Post. “It definitely gives you a better anchor when you’re playing against the run. That was a big goal of mine during the offseason, to become a better run defender as well as improve my pass rush.”

I think it is great that Aaron Maybin was thinking outside of the box to put on weight.  He used his resources and his friendship with Phelps to increase his weight.  Phelps certainly has to have big calorie meals and Maybin was able to use that to put on good playing weight.
