The Indianapolis Colts continued to break new ground as a franchise on Wednesday, by holding a mini-camp practice at Lucas Oil Stadium open to the public and fans. The mini-camp also served as the first opportunity for Colts fans to see the new future of their franchise. Andrew Luckmade his first public appearance with his new team, throwing passes, and signing autographs afterward.
Wearing a red jersey and no pads, Andrew Luck took the field at his new home stadium for the first time. The offense and defense spilt into groups on opposite sides of the field, doing stretches and short drills. When the team did get together, they began by down full offensive play-action pass drills.
The play-action drills began with a double-reverse to Reggie Wayne. Luck’s first pass attempt was a play-action fake that was smoothly completed to rookie tight end Dwayne Allen. The next pass play was a quick dump off to Wayne that could have resulted in an open dash to the end zone. The last play of that session was less successful, a broken-up pass that was almost intercepted and taken back the other way on defense.
The team went into blitz pick-up offense next. The first pass was broken up over the middle, a quick but off-target bullet to rookie tight end Coby Fleener. Luck’s next attempt was also a miscue. He faked a pass in one direction, and shuffled his feet for a bit too long in the pocket, before missing a pass over the middle to Wayne.
Luck’s best moment came during the last set of plays, which was a run of two-minute offensive drills. Duting the first set, Luck led the team down the field, and threw a fade route touchdown pass from the four-yard line on what would have been a fourth down play.
Luck’s last drive of the day didn’t end as successfully, but resulted in his best pass of the day. Luck avoided a rusher, stepped up in the pocket, and hit Fleener in stride across the middle, resulting in a 20-yard gain.
About 7,500 fans showed up to open practice to see their new team take the field for the first time. Luck didn’t quite look at home on his new home turf just yet, but he did look confident, with flashes of something worth building on.
