The first of the Rant Sports NFL Power Rankings came out today with the New York Giants coming in third behind the New England Patriots and the Green Bay Packers. If you haven’t seen it already check it out here.
To me, going into a season, whoever won a championship should be atop a power ranking and whoever they defeated should be number two unless they suffered a catastrophic injury or lost their best player to free agency in the off-season. The Giants did lose some offensive weapons in the off-season, but to me not enough to take them off of the top spot. It’s not like they lost Eli Manning.
Yes the Giants lost Brandon Jacobs, Mario Manningham and Jake Ballard, but they did draft David Wilson and Rueben Randle, and the core of the team remains the same, with some of the core even getting better like Jason Pierre-Paul.
The Giants beat those two teams to get to the Super Bowl last year, so to me having them ahead of the Giants doesn’t make a lot of sense. Power Rankings are just a fun way to see what people’s opinions are about their team and the league as a whole.
To me the Giants are number one until after the first week of the season. Then we can re-evaluate.
