Plaxico Burress has Unrequited Interest in Carolina Panthers

Plaxico Burress sill says he wants to play for the Carolina Panthers. But apparently, the feeling isn’t mutual according to an unnamed source in Panthers management.

“I’ve talked to Cam Newton several times he was down here this off-season throwing. I didn’t get the opportunity to go out and throw with him,” Burress said. “But I really like him as a quarterback.”

Plaxico Burress apparently has a lot of family near the Charlotte area, and he respects what the Panthers were able to put together last year under a rookie quarterback.

“My brother lives right there in Charlotte, my cousin lives there in Charlotte, and all my family is there in Columbia, South Carolina. It would just be a great situation all the way around and being close to everybody.

“Not just that, but playing with Cam, who I think is one of the top five quarterbacks in all of football, and as long as I can remember, Steve Smith has been one of my favorites. I just think it’s a great situation.”

Burress didn’t have a remarkable year last year. Burress caught 54 passes for 612 yards and eight touchdowns last season with the Jets.
But he says that he is in much better shape than last year, after being out of prison for 2 years now.

“I’m a lot stronger than what I was last year, obviously,” he said. “And I think a lot of people will be surprised at the kind of shape that I’m in. I’m ready to go and compete back at the level that I know I can play at.”

Burress returned to the NFL with the New York Jets last season after serving almost two years in prison on a weapons charge in New York, after he accidently shot himself in the leg with handgun.

Perhaps the Panthers would be interested if Burress didn’t bring so much age and baggage to the table, but he should find an NFL home eventually, because he is such a great red zone threat.
