Not too long ago the New York Giants finally ended all the Osi Umenyiora drama by giving him a moderate raise for the final year of his contract. Osi agreed on a restructured deal that will give him essentially a 50 percent raise, from $4 million to $6 million. So why is former Giant Michael Strahan starting drama when the matter was put to bed?
Well, it’s because Strahan likes to talk, and does not shy away when people put microphones in front of him.
“To be honest with you, it’s flat-out robbery,” Strahan said while at the Big Daddy Oheka Castle Celebrity Golf Tournament in Huntington. He made it pretty clear what he would have done.
“If it were me, I would have sat at home and I wouldn’t have played,” Strahan said. “That’s just me. I’ve threatened to do that in my time and I ended up getting what I wanted. Osi’s a different mindset than me. I’m probably a little more, ‘I don’t care what people think.’”
Is anyone surprised by Strahan saying this? He said it himself—he has held out in the past and was rewarded with a nice contract from the Giants. Obviously Jerry Reese has a bit more back bone than former GM Ernie Accorsi, because Osi has squabbled with management for years and still has yet to get a long term extension.
I can’t blame Strahan for answering questions, but he should have just stayed out of it. Instead he stirred the pot and got people talking about something negative. You’re one of the greats Michael, but sometimes you should keep that gap in your teeth covered with your lips.
