New Orleans Saints’ Sean Payton Files For Divorce
New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is having a terrible season and it is about to get worse. Not only is he suspended without pay for the entire 2012 NFL season but also he has recently filed for divorce from his wife Beth Payton.
Apparently, the filings for divorce do not report either of the Payton’s names but it does include the initials PSP for Payton and BAP for Beth. The purpose of this was so the news would not be made public, however, that appears to have backfired. The divorce filings also list the date of which the Payton’s were married, the birth dates of their two children, and the word Payton as part of the computer file containing the petition for divorce.
Payton has listed the grounds for divorce to be “discord or conflict of personalities between Petitioner and Respondent that destroys the legitimate ends of the marriage relationship and prevents any reasonable expectation of reconciliation.”
The original petition filed by Payton requested that he and his wife would divide their estate out of court and have joint custody of their children, Conner and Meghan. However, Beth has countered with a request that she be appointed the custodian “who has the exclusive right to designate the primary residence of the children in Tarrant County, Texas (where Payton’s home is located).” She also goes on to ask that Sean Payton be only allowed to see the children “as necessary to protect the health and well-being of the children.”
The counter-petition goes on to request Beth be the sole person who makes the decisions regarding the children’s medical, legal, and educational obligations while Sean must pay the expenses of all three. This is very typical in divorce filings, especially in this case considering Payton has spent almost the entirety of his time with the Saints or preparing for the upcoming season while Beth takes care of the children. Payton reiterates this in his book “Home Team: Coaching the Saints and New Orleans Back to Life.”
“Whenever you take a new coaching job and you have a young family, you really spend a year away from them, at least to some degree,” Payton wrote in his book. “You’re starting the new job. You have to sell your old house. So you lose a good part of a year.”
As if separating from his wife is not bad enough, Payton will also be losing the entirety of his $5.8 million paycheck he was supposed to receive this season after his involvement in New Orleans’ “Bounty Scandal” that took place over the last few seasons. He is not allowed to be around the NFL in any way or form until next year, which means a majority of his friends will not be able to help him through this difficult time.
It certainly does not seem Payton’s life can get any worse considering the only two things he has ever known is family and football. The suspension from the NFL could have been a blessing in disguise because it would have given him more time to spend with his wife and kids, but apparently, all that free time at home has backfired.
To add salt to the wound the Payton’s, who got married on July 11, 1992, will be missing their 20th anniversary by eight days.
