The New Orleans Saints and rookie offensive tackle Marcel Jones have agreed to a four year deal that would have Jones signed through 2015. Jones was the Saints’ seventh round pick of the 2012 NFL draft, and the 234th overall pick. During his time at the University of Nebraska Jones played in 39 games and helped the Cornhuskers rank 16th in the nation at protecting the run. Furthermore, the Cornhuskers’ offensive line only gave up 21 sacks last season.
Standing at 6’6″ and weighing 330 pounds Jones is a big left offensive tackle and can take up a lot of space on the offensive line. Jones is great at stopping the run and can stop opposing defenders right on the line. In addition, Jones is a competent pass blocker but with three other LOT’s on the Saints Jones will not start right away. Jones will be backing up current Saints offensive left tackle, Jermon Bushrod. However, Jones does have the potential to be a starter in the NFL, he is only 23 years old and now that he is in the NFL he will be able to develop and get even better.
There are a few things that Jones will need to improve on as he starts his NFL career. Jones is not very athletic and sometimes has trouble stopping opposing linebackers. Also, Jones dealt with various injuries during his college career and his health may be an issue. Jones needs to tune up some of his skills and prove that he can stay healthy he will be able to provide great depth for the Saints’ offensive line. The Saints are doing a great job of signing their draft picks right now and they continue to stay focused and prepared for the upcoming season.
