NFL Rumors: New Orleans Saints and Drew Brees at Contract Impasse
It looks like the New Orleans Saints nightmare of an off-season will continue into training camp. Drew Brees will continue his holdout if he doesn’t get the contract he wants. The Saints and Brees have until July 16th to resolve their differences, otherwise Brees cannot sign a long-term deal and can only report to camp by signing his franchise offer.
Brees has been offered $19.5 million a year by the Saints which is half a million more than what the Denver Broncos pay Peyton Manning per year. It appears Brees has asked for $20.5 million a year, so the two parties are $1 million apart.
I can’t see this lasting that much longer. The last thing the Saints need at this point is for their quarterback and basically offensive coordinator on the field for this year to not show up to camp. Without head coach Sean Payton, Brees is the offense. Before the Brees, the franchise was a didn’t mean a lot. Brees has put the Saints on the map, proving that he was healthy after coming off shoulder surgery and leading them to a Super Bowl win. The Saints need to get the deal done and move on.
