San Diego Chargers wide receiver Malcom Floyd is a sleeper pick in fantasy football
San Diego Chargers wide receiver Malcom Floyd finished his 2011 season with 43 receptions, 856 yards and five touchdown receptions in 12 games. Floyd was on pace for 57 receptions, 1,141 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in a full season. Floyd led the NFL in yards per reception with an average of 19.9 in 2011 and was 18th in receiving yards per game. His best game of 2011 came against the Oakland Raiders as he had seven receptions for 127 yards and a touchdown.
As of now, Floyd is ranked 52nd among wide receivers in yahoo fantasy football, which is probably due to him missing four games last season and five games in 2010. Also, it is more than likely due to Vincent Jackson signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Some may view this more pressure on Floyd and less opportunities for explosive plays now that San Diego’s 2011 leader in receiving yards and touchdown receptions is in Tampa. However, Jackson missed 11 games in 2010 when Floyd had 37 receptions, 717 yards and six touchdown receptions in 11 games. Floyd was on pace for 54 receptions, 1,043 receiving yards and nine touchdown receptions in 2010. He was also fourth in the NFL that season with an average of 19.4 yards per reception.
As with any player, health will be key for Floyd in 2012. Floyd was top five in yards per reception from 2009-2011, and ranks third in his career among active players with an average of 17.9 yards per reception. Floyd’s receiving yards per game have increased every year since the 2007 season and he could be in store for a huge season in 2012.
