Elvis Dumervil is just the latest football player to run afoul of the law during the offseason. The Denver Broncos star was arrested in Miami Saturday night and charged with aggravated assault with a firearm. Not exactly the way that you want to spend a Saturday night. His bond was set at $7,500 but that is the only information out there right now.
If you think a lot of players have been arrested this offseason, you would be correct on that. The sheer amount of arrests is absolute staggering. I guess last year we were all focusing on the lockout for news. This summer, it is trying to piece together what player got arrested for what.
Aggravated assault with a firearm certainly does not sound like a good thing. There is going to be a lot of hype surrounding the Broncos this year and this news is not going to bring good publicity. Dumervil is a pass rushing force when he is healthy and a big part of what Denver does.
We shall see if the commissioner’s office decides to get involved with this. There is a very low tolerance for off the field transgressions, but details on this are still coming out. I don’t think we get word on what could happen to Elvis Dumervil until the full account is released.
We desperately need training camps to open up. Watching guys put on the pads and play is great, but the best part will be keeping players out of trouble.
