Wes Welker has turned into one of the most productive wideouts in all of football but the man still can not get a new deal. The deadline has passed and the New England Patriots were unable to come to an agreement with their star wideout, which means he plays out this year on the franchise tag or he will hold out.
Personally, I think Wes Welker deserves a long term deal. The guy puts up numbers like it his job. However, he has some injury questions that hover around him. He might be reaching the end of his line, but I still think he can be productive for three or four years. That means a new contract would make a ton of sense.
The best thing for Welker to do is play out of his mind this coming season. If the Patriots do not want to give him the money that he thinks he deserves, he can take his services elsewhere. That might hurt the Pats in the long run, considering they have had trouble getting wideouts to stick. Then again, they have two amazing tight ends so that helps offset the problem.
A holdout could be coming down the line, but I am not sure if Welker will do that. He seems like too much of a professional to hold out. It is a risk but if he plays the season and puts up big numbers, he will be up for a very big deal. It’s a gamble that I think he might just take.
I doubt that Welker will be a problem during the season. He is too much of a professional to carry a grudge and this will only fuel him to perform better. Expect a big year from Welker as he tries to prove all of his doubters wrong. The man wants to get paid and he will prove it on the field.
