San Diego Chargers wide receiver Robert Meachem is ranked 55th among players at his position in yahoo sports fantasy football. Meachem played with the New Orleans Saints from 2008-2011 and his best season came in 2009 when he caught 45 passes for 722 yards and was tied for 10th in touchdown receptions with nine. Meachem ranks seventh among active players with an average of 16.1 yards per reception in his career. This makes him a threat for long touchdowns, which means more fantasy points for the people who own him in their leagues. The best regular season game in Meachem’s career was against the Washington Redskins in 2009. He caught eight passes for 142 yards and a TD. Meachem’s best regular season game in 2011 was against the Detroit Lions when he caught three passes for 119 yards and a TD.
I have no doubt that Chargers tight end Antonio Gates will be the number one option. Gates led San Diego in receptions, receiving yards and TD receptions from 2004-2007, led the team in receptions and TD receptions from 2004-2008, led the team in receiving yards and TD receptions in 2010 when he missed six games and led the team in receptions from 2004-2009 as well as 2011.
Malcom Floyd was third on the team in receiving yards in 2009, second in 2010 and second in 2011 while leading the team in receiving yards per game in 2011 and he led the NFL in yards per reception in 2011.
Gates missed six games in 2010 and three games in 2011 while Floyd missed five games in 2010 and four in 2011, so Meachem should be more of a target on San Diego than he was on New Orleans.
