Jacksonville Jaguars Rookie Justin Blackmon Pleads Guilty To DUI

By Joey Farbo

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie wide receiver Justin Blackmon entered a guilty plea for an aggravated DUI charge on Tuesday in Oklahoma.

Blackmon, who was arrested back in June on the charge after he was selected by the Jaguars in the first round of April’s NFL Draft, was not in attendance at the hearing and his lawyer submitted the guilty plea on his behalf.

With the plea, Blackmon will serve no time in jail as long as he fulfills the terms of his sentence which include a $500 fine and 50 hours of community service. It also prevents Blackmon’s case from going to trial and dragging the issue out any longer.

The aggravated DUI charge stems from an incident on June 3 in which Blackmon blew a 0.24 and 0.26 on breathalyzer tests administered by the police after a traffic stop.

With the guilty plea, Blackmon will now likely enter the NFL’s substance abuse program and be subject to counseling, random drug testing and suspensions for further incidents.

The Jaguars have yet to sign Blackmon to his rookie deal, which is expected to be in the neighborhood of four years and $20 million, because they may seek to add some additional language to his contract that would protect them financially if he has another incident. While Blackmon says he does not have a drinking problem, the Jaguars would like to have the ability to take the appropriate action if he decides to have another run in with the law.

The Jaguars open up their training camp on Thursday, but Blackmon will not be able to participate until he signs his contract.
